Today, July 17, 2020, Green Yachts began sailing two electric sailboats together across the Atlantic Ocean delivering them from Croatia and Sweden to the USA.
There are no official statistics on ocean crossings by electric boats. We estimate that the oceans have been crossed less than 25 times by electric boats. Some of the most notable ocean crossings by an electric boat are:
- The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar became the
- first solar electric vehicle of any type to circumnavigate the planet according to the Guinness Book of World Records
- The Maestro 40 was the first electric sailboat to participate in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) in 2015
- Greta Thunberg crossed the Atlantic on the electric Malizia II to give a speech at the United Nations in 2019
- Sailing Uma crossing the Atlantic using their DIY electric motor in 2019
We believe that our 2020 Atlantic crossing will be the first ocean crossing of two or more electric boats traveling together. We are excited to contributing to our global sailing understanding of electric sailing and that the trend of electric sailboats will continue to grow until one day, the majority of sailboats in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers and the Vendée Globe and the Volvo Ocean Race are electric.
Please follow along as we contribute to the milestones achieved by electric sailboats as we conduct the first multiple electric boat journey across an ocean. We will be posting to our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages as possible during our journey.
